West Ham United’s Premier League opener did not go to plan for Manuel Pellegrini’s men on Sunday.
With Liverpool being tipped by many to prove Manchester City’s closest challengers this season, West Ham coming away from Anfield on Sunday with any points would have to have been deemed something of an upset.
It looked to be a fantastic summer for the Hammers. The appointment of Manuel Pellegrini was a major statement from the board, and they followed that up by making a number of exciting signings that suggested that the club could cause plenty of teams a number of problems this coming season.
Unfortunately for the Irons, Liverpool strolled to an emphatic 4-0 win on Merseyside at the weekend to move to the top of the table following the opening weekend. West Ham obviously find themselves at the bottom.
It is too soon to write the Hammers off. Liverpool will dismantle a number of teams this term, while five new signings started for Pellegrini’s side so it was always unlikely that the visitors were going to find their perfect performance at the first attempt.
Nevertheless, it is a troubling start for West Ham. And their frustration is perhaps best exemplified by the dejection on Jack Wilshere’s face in a number of images from the contest.
Wilshere could undoubtedly be one of their best signings, but like many of his teammates, he desperately struggled to make a major impact at Anfield as the home side dominated in the middle of the park.
