Aston Villa picked up a 1-0 win over Birmingham City on Sunday afternoon, with Gabriel Agbonlahor again haunting Villa’s fiercest rivals.
Whilst Villa’s season is all but over, Birmingham are hovering precariously above the Championship relegation zone, and appointed Harry Redknapp as their new manager just days before the game following Gianfranco Zola’s resignation.
Birmingham desperately needed three points, but it was Villa who claimed the win, as substitute Gabriel Agbonlahor again struck against the Blues, smashing home from close range after Birmingham failed to clear.
That was Agbonlahor’s fifth goal in ten appearances for Villa against Birmingham, and fittingly his first goal of the season, showing that the 30-year-old continues to score against the Blues without making much of an impact in other games.
The result leaves Villa 12th in the Championship table on 61 points, whilst Birmingham are on 47 points, only two points clear of the relegation zone with just two games left to play.
Birmingham’s plight leaves them dangerously close to League One, and new manager Redknapp showed his anguish during and after the game, cutting a dejected, deflated figure as Agbonlahor won the game for Villa.
Redknapp attempted to rally fans at the final whistle as they fret over relegation, but that mood couldn’t be more different than Aston Villa’s on Sunday afternoon.
Homegrown duo Gabriel Agbonlahor and Jack Grealish were seen celebrating wildly after the derby day win, summing up just how much it means to both players having come up through the ranks at Villa Park.
