Plenty of fringe players will be hoping for a chance against Arsenal at the weekend.

The Greek international joined Sunderland from Panathinaikos in 2013. The fee was undisclosed, but Sky Sports reported it was in the region of £3 million.

He went on to become yet another Paolo Di Canio flop. He played just six times for the club, scoring one goal, and in fairness was not performing badly for a then teenager signed from another country.

He dropped out of contention completely last season and was loaned back to Panathinaikos for the 2014-15 season.

Recently he has been in reasonably good form for the Sunderland Under-21s and with an FA Cup tie with Arsenal not a priority for relegation threatened Sunderland the Greek talent might get another go.

He has indeed been involved in the Sunderland first-team training sessions this week. He was snapped in action with the rest of the Sunderland players despite his lacking in recent first-team football.

Mavrias was not the only odd face in training yesterday. 20-year-old left-back talent Thomas Robson and 21-year-old attacking midfielder George Honeyman getting involved, after his recent loan spell at Gateshead.

All three young men will be hoping to get their chance against Arsenal at the weekend.
