Two years ago today, Raheem Sterling opened his account for Liverpool.
On October 20 2012 a 17-year-old Raheem Sterling started what has since become something of a habit, netting his first Liverpool goal in a 1-0 win against Reading.
The victory was vital for the Reds, who had until then not won a league game at Anfield all season. But the teenager changed that, taking his side up to 11th in the table as a result.
Sterling’s goal made him the second-youngest Liverpool player to score a Premier League goal behind Michael Owen, and what a vital one it was.
When you consider that Rodgers’ side were faltering up until that point, it may have been a far more important strike than we will ever know. But the simple fact is Sterling put in a scintillating performance – one that should have inspired Liverpool to a far more comprehensive victory.
Since that match exactly two years ago today, Sterling has gone on to net a further 14 – not bad for a player still to reach his 20th birthday.
