Villa travelled down to the Madejski Stadium looking to avoid a slip-up against a Reading side fighting for their lives in the Championship.
It wasn’t exactly a game for the purists; there were just five shots on target in the entire game, and a 0-0 draw wasn’t exactly a surprise come the final whistle.
Villa will take the point and the clean sheet, and now sit four points adrift of the play-off places as things stand right now.
Boss Dean Smith was able to blood two of his deadline day signings in the Villa side, handing a start to Tyrone Mings as the left-sided centre back.
Some wondered whether the Bournemouth-owned defender would play at left back, but Smith paired him up with Tommy Elphick in the heart of his back line.
On 74 minutes, Smith brought on Tom Carroll for his Villa debut, having arrived on loan from Swansea City in the dying embers of deadline day.
