Glasgow Rangers suffered a hugely disappointing defeat at Ibrox in a game that threatened to be something special for Graeme Murty’s men.
Rangers fans will probably have a pretty sickening feeling in their stomach this evening after Graeme Murty’s men seemed to miss an ideal opportunity to finally get a win over Celtic and perhaps set up a title race in the Scottish Premiership.
The Gers went into the Old Firm clash off the back of a run of six wins in a row in all competitions, and it appeared that they may be about to make it seven.
Josh Windass capitalised on an awful mistake from Dedryck Boyata to put the home side in front in emphatic fashion early on. Tom Rogic would equalise with a stunning goal not long after.
But Rangers stole the momentum back from their bitter rivals with Daniel Candeias putting Murty’s men back in the lead just after the halfway point in the first-half. However, Celtic would strike in stoppage-time with Moussa Dembele capitalising on some questionable defending.
It appeared that Rangers had the opening they would need to go on and win during the second-half when Jozo Simunovic was sent off for an elbow that caught Alfredo Morelos in the face. But Celtic would be the ones to bag the fifth goal through Odsonne Edouard.
After five goals of the highest quality, Morelos had the chance to equalise from a couple of yards after Scott Bain’s save from Josh Windass. But somehow, the Colombian managed to hit the post when the goal was gaping to leave everyone stunned.
Jason Cummings’ reaction to the miss provided one of the defining images of the game as he clearly could not believe that Morelos had hit the post when it was easier to score.
The disappointment was made evident in another image that depicted Greg Docherty leaving the field clearly distraught as Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers headed onto the pitch to celebrate the win.
And perhaps the most telling image of Murty showed the Rangers boss praying to the heavens during the game. Could he now be facing a fight to prove that he deserves to earn a new contract?
