Hal Robson-Kanu snatched a late winner as Chris Coleman’s side beat Slovakia 2-1 in their first-ever match at a European Championship finals.
Wales began their Euro 2016 campaign in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon, beating Slovakia 2-1 in Bordeaux thanks to a late strike from substitute Hal Robson-Kanu.
Gareth Bale opened the scoring for Chris Coleman’s side in the 10th-minute with a dipping free-kick, but Slovakia equalised on the hour mark when Ondrej Duda capitalised on some slack defending to slot past goalkeeper Danny Ward.
Wales eventually gathered themselves, however, and rallied to find the winner nine minutes from time when a heavy touch from Aaron Ramsey on the edge of the box saw the ball fall for Robson-Kanu to scuff home a finish and secure his side all three points.
Colman’s men now face England on Thursday before next Monday’s final Group B game against Russia and, with 16 of the 24 teams in the Euros qualifying for the knockout stages, they look to be in a strong position to extend their stay in France.
The 1-1 draw between England and Russia in Marseille even means they go into their second match sitting atop the group, marking a perfect start to their first major tournament since the 1958 World Cup.
