The Newcastle United man out-muscled his Aston Villa counterpart to win a point for Serbia.
Newcastle United’s Aleksandar Mitrovic grabbed an 86th-minute equaliser as Serbia denied Wales a victory in Cardiff last night.
Chris Coleman’s side looked set to move second in Group D of World Cup qualifying, courtesy of Gareth Bale’s opener on the half-hour mark.
But the Newcastle marksman, who has four goals in his last three games for the Magpies, out-fought Aston Villa’s James Chester to reach a cross and guide a header past Wayne Hennessey.
As a result of the point, it is Serbia who moved second behind Ireland in the Group, and the 22-year-old was swarmed by his team-mates following the goal, while the Aston Villa centre-back looked visibly distraught.
Chester joined the Villans from West Bromwich Albion for £9 million (according to The Mail) from West Bromwich Albion in the summer and has gone about his business quietly, but very effectively.
Meanwhile, former Anderlecht hitman Mitrovic is certainly in a rich vein of form as of late, and he will hope to keep his place in Newcastle’s XI for Saturday’s visit to Leeds United.
That being said, Dwight Gayle, the Championship’s leading goalscorer with 11, might have something to say about that.
