The Chronicle has reported that Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer is set to finally have a statue dedicated to his career with the club.

Shearer is one of the club’s best ever strikers and the nine foot statue will be erected somewhere in the city as a tribute to the club’s former player.

Shearer scored 148 goals in 303 league appearances for the club and also managed the team for a brief period back in 2009.

The current side could use a striker of his experience and consistency as they look to hunt down a place in the Premier League’s top eight under John Carver.

The paper claims that in a poll they conducted last month, 90% of Newcastle fans who took part wanted to see Shearer honoured in some form with a statue outside the ground.

It’s reported that Shearer’s statue was nearly binned because of owner Mike Ashley, but a campaign for it to be finished appears to have done the trick.

Where and when it will be erected is yet to have been confirmed by club officials.
