Steven Gerrard has congratulated Rangers on Instagram after winning the Scottish Cup.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s outfit beat Hearts 2-0 after extra time to win the competition for the first time since way back in 2009.
Goals from Ryan Jack and Scott Wright ultimately did the damage for Rangers in a week which threatened to be absolutely horrific.
Defeat today would’ve capped a horrible few days for the Gers, who lost a Europa League final on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday night.
But Rangers got the job done this afternoon at Hampden Park.
And here’s what Gerrard posted on Instagram after the victory:
When did Rangers last win the Scottish Cup?
This is the first time that the light Blues have won this competition in 13 years.
For context, Nacho Novo was on the scoresheet back in 2009 when Rangers – then under Walter Smith – beat Falkirk 1-0.
With that in mind, it actually seems a lot longer than 13 years ago, given the trial and tribulations to happen at Ibrox since then – and there’s been plenty.
Overall, it’s been a pretty disappointing season.
Rangers failed to defend their Scottish Premiership title, after coasting to an unbeaten season under Gerrard last time around.
That trophy has gone back to Celtic for at least another year, but any trophy is worth celebrating and no doubt that the light Blues players – most of them signed by Gerrard – salvaged the campaign in a massive way today by winning this.
