Vincent Janssen was making his first appearance for any Tottenham Hotspur side since August 2017 on Monday.
Tottenham’s under-23 side’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Monday was significant as it saw Vincent Janssen make his first appearance for any Spurs side since August 2017.
The Dutchman has endured a nightmare spell since joining Mauricio Pochettino’s side in 2016. He scored six goals during his first season with the club, including just two strikes in 28 Premier League appearances.
He was given a chance by Spurs last term – albeit an incredibly brief one – as he came on for the final couple of minutes of their league defeat to Chelsea at Wembley. But shortly after that appearance, he was on his way out.
A loan spell at Fenerbahce failed to ignite, and he returned to his parent club in the summer with seemingly no chance of turning his fortunes around under Pochettino.
Injury has taken the 24-year-old out of the equation for much of this season, but he finally got the chance to play for the club again as he started the under-23s’ clash with the Reds this week.
He did not get onto scoresheet before he was substituted, but Janssen gave a decent account of himself and may perhaps be hoping that he can start to get some momentum going, whether that be to catch Pochettino’s eye or to put himself in the shop window while the January window is open.
