There were a number of reasons for Liverpool fans to feel emotional today.

Liverpool allowed fans back inside Anfield as Jurgen Klopp’s side clinched Champions League qualification by sealing a top-four finish, with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Both of those are big enough reasons to draw tears from the Reds’ support.

But the likely departure of Gini Wijnaldum is also a bit of a sore one.

The Dutch midfielder, who is out of contract next month, played probably his last game this afternoon – and what a brilliant performance it was.

Wijnaldum joined Liverpool back in 2016 and has played a huge role in their Premier League and Champions League success since then.

And the player himself looked emotional when Jurgen Klopp brought him off on 77 minutes for James Milner.

Wijnaldum was met at the dugout by Virgil van Dijk, who embraced his fellow Netherlands international with a big hug in scenes that moved some Liverpool fans.

Where the former Newcastle midfielder is going remains to be seen.

Barcelona have been heavily linked over the past 12 months, but there money problems may make it difficult to fund his wages, despite the fact there will be no transfer fee.
