Despite that disappointment, the Dutchman’s passion after he scored from the spot showed just what a kind of player Tottenham have at their disposal and that will only be a good thing as the campaign goes on.
Some struggling footballers let their disappointment at falling below their own high standards affect their game and their mind-set. However the summer signing from AZ Alkmaar is keeping his head up and continuing to play a vital role for Mauricio Pochettino’s side…even if some fans feel otherwise.
Janssen’s three goals for Spurs this season have all come from the spot, but the image of the striker celebrating shows that he lives for goals and when the tide does ultimately turn he looks set to take White Hart Lane by storm.
It is rare for a footballer to arrive at another country and shine from the outset; in most cases there is a settling in period and that certainly appears to be the case with Janssen.
But most flops simply cannot handle the physicality of the Premier League, and Janssen simply thrives on it, so Tottenham fans should get used to seeing that raw emotion Janssen shows when he scores. It will soon be a far more regular occurrence.
