Mohamed Elneny is very much a forgotten man at Arsenal these days.

The Egypt international left for Africa Cup of Nations duty in January and helped his country reach the final of the competition.

However, Elneny hasn’t had a look-in under Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta since returning.

Elneny hasn’t started a game in any competition for the Gunners since a League Cup victory over Sunderland in December.

But the former Basel midfielder seems fit.

He was among those being put through his paces by Arteta during a training session at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

And here’s a few photos of the man himself in action yesterday:

Special

The Spanish manager is a fan of the 29-year-old midfielder.

After a victory at Old Trafford in 2020, the Arsenal boss labelled Elneny – who was signed by Arsene Wenger – as a ‘special‘ player.

However, the competition for places is depriving Elneny of regular football.

Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey make up Arteta’s first two priorities for midfield roles, and even Sambi Lokonga is seemingly ahead of Elneny in the pecking order in North London.

With his contract expiring this summer, and Arsenal only having the Premier League left to compete in, it’s genuinely possible that Arteta won’t be using Elneny ever again.

However, he has been as professional as anybody in London Colney down the years and even if that’s the case, he’ll accept his fate.
