The 19-year-old has plenty of talent, but that is not a price-tag which suggests he has fulfilled his potential in North London and his failure to make the grade will be a cautionary tale to younger players in the academy.
One player who will be trying to succeed where Edwards failed is the highly-rated midfielder Oliver Skipp.
The 17-year-old is considered the next big thing in Spurs’ youth ranks, with the club’s Head of Development John McDermott describing him as an “outstanding” prospect in 2016.
Skipp, named by The Guardian as the Lilywhites’ next big talent in 2017, is progressing at an alarming rate but although The Evening Standard reported that he wouldn’t be considered for first-team action next season, could he?
The English wonderkid was photographed in Pochettino’s first-team training session on Tuesday, which means that he is being observed by the Argentine manager at close quarters.
Of course, being involved in a first-team session hardly means that he’ll be among the first-team squad next season, but it does indicate that Pochettino is intrigued by Skipp and it’ll be interesting to see if he can develop into the senior star that Edwards was supposed to be.
