The Newcastle United defender was out for the count on international duty yesterday.
If any Newcastle United fans tuned into Switzerland’s Euro 2020 qualifier on Saturday, they’ll have been worried for the welfare of Fabian Schar.
Schar’s side beat Georgia 2-0 in Tbilisi but the win was somewhat overshadowed by fears over the Newcastle centre-back.
The 27-year-old was involved in a ‘sickening’ clash of heads with opposition player Jemal Tabidze which resulted in the Magpies star being knocked unconscious [The Sun].
With his arms out wide, Schar was motionless on the ground as team-mates and Georgia players rushed to his aid for fear of him swallowing his tongue.
The incident occurred after an aerial challenge with Tabidze which, as the pictures illustrate, left the hosts’ player with some damage too.
Fortunately, Schar, who joined Newcastle last summer, was able to continue in the end, but not before four minutes of treatment.
Schar has emerged as a very popular figure among the United faithful this season. Not only for his stellar defending, but the big centre-back has also brought St James’s Park to its feet with some wonder goals.
