Mikel Merino was an interesting inclusion in Newcastle United training on Thursday.
Mikel Merino was spotted in Newcastle United training today.
The midfielder, who joined the Magpies in an £8 million permanent deal in October after initially signing on a season-long loan from Borussia Dortmund, has endured an underwhelming last four months after beginning life in the North-East so well.
The 21-year-old has only started two Premier League games for Newcastle in 2018 and missed last week’s shock defeat by West Bromwich Albion entirely, failing to make even the substitutes bench.
But the Spaniard was pictured being put through his paces ahead of United’s trip to Watford on Saturday and it’ll be interesting to see if Rafael Benitez uses him at Vicarage Road.
Losing at Watford would represent Newcastle’s third successive defeat and it’s not the way in which United would have wanted to end the season.
Having done so well to win their relegation battle, a fast-and-furious finish would have been ideal for Newcastle and although they can win their last three games, they may not be motivated to do so.
