Leeds United defender Kyle Bartley sat on the ground dejected at the full time whistle after his side’s defeat at Brentford, while teammate Luke Ayling scratched his head.

It was a far cry from the jubilant scenes earlier in the season when the two sides met, when Bartley scored a dramatic late winner at Elland Road.

This time around Leeds were second best from the opening whistle, with Romaine Sawyers and Lass Vibe’s first half goals putting the game out of Leeds’ reach.

Top scorer Chris Wood was kept an isolated figure up front, with Pablo Hernandez’s threat stifled, and wingers Stuart Dallas and Mo Barrow being substituted off midway through the second half after proving ineffective.

Brentford managed nine efforts on goal to Leeds’ five, and there were no complaints that the Bees did not deserve all three points.

It is little wonder that Leeds’ players were looking dejected at the final whistle, their second defeat in as many games.

Yet they will have been cheered slightly by the news that seventh placed Fulham failed to win, ensuring Leeds still have a five point cushion keeping them in the play-off places.

The players will hope to be feeling different at the final whistle after this weekend’s clash at home to Preston.
