Leeds United suffered another Championship defeat, but there were a couple of positives for Paul Heckingbottom to reflect upon.
With Leeds suffering yet another defeat going into the international break, it seems highly unlikely that many of the Elland Road faithful will want to remember Saturday’s clash with Sheffield Wednesday for too long.
Leeds went into the game boasting just one win since the turn of the year and were facing an Owls side that were also experiencing some terrible form having only taken one victory in 2018.
However, it was Jos Luhukay’s men who went into the international break on something of a high as they claimed the bragging rights in a game that threatened to fizzle out into a drab affair before coming to life in the final 10 minutes.
Leeds, a goal down thanks to Atdhe Nuhiu’s close-range finish 19 minutes from time, found an equaliser when Pablo Hernandez’s cross found Jay-Roy Grot for his first Leeds goal.
The jubilation was short-lived for Leeds however, as Nuhiu got the better of a dual with Matthew Pennington to slide home the winner in stoppage-time to leave Paul Heckingbottom’s men 14th in the table and 12 points off the top six.
There were some positives from Leeds to take from the game – albeit quite small ones – and one of those was undoubtedly the goal scored by Grot, who has endured an extremely difficult spell with Leeds so far and went into Saturday still awaiting his first senior goal for the club.
He had been written off by many, but an impressive spell in the under-23s was rewarded with another chance to make an impact for the first-team from the bench – and he took full advantage to score the home side’s goal.
So perhaps the image that the club posted on their official Twitter account may be looked back upon in the future as the exact moment that the turning point in Grot’s Leeds spell took place – provided that he builds on the goal against Wednesday.
