Could Leeds United be closing in on a move for the Everton defender?

Is is no secret that Leeds United need a new centre-back or two this summer, with Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper their only senior options as things stand. So Whites fans will be excited to see a photo doing the rounds on social media that could show Everton’s Matthew Pennington arriving at the club ahead of a move.

Shortly after the photograph was posted online – with credit to Twitter account I’d Radebe LeedsYorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay claimed a deal was all but done to secure the 22-year-old on a season-long loan move.

Leeds have impressed with their transfer business so far this summer, with new manager Thomas Christiansen bringing in some very exciting attacking options including Caleb Ekuban, Ezgjan Alioski and Samu Saiz.

However, with former loanee Kyle Bartley returning to his parent club Swansea City earlier this summer, and with no future for the much-maligned Giuseppe Bellusci, Leeds were always likely to strengthen at the back.

Pennington is at an age when he will want to be playing regular first-team football and Leeds are likely to have promised him that to get a deal over the line.

The youngster has featured 46 times for Everton’s under-23 side but has only managed nine matches for the senior team to date.

Leeds will be looking to get over last season’s disappointment by mounting a serious title challenge and at this rate few would bet against them giving it a damn good shot.
