Leeds booked their place in the last eight of the EFL Cup with a win over their Championship rivals.
Leeds United booked their place in the last eight of the EFL Cup in dramatic fashion as they overcame Championship rivals Norwich City after a penalty shootout.
Even with home advantage, Garry Monk’s men would have known that it was going to take a considerable effort to reach the quarter-final for the first time since 2012 as their opponents are currently flying high in the league.
And it appeared that the eight changes Monk made from the Leeds side that beat Wolves at the weekend may have been too many when Alex Pritchard opened the scoring after 14 minutes with a close-range header.
However, the Whites restored parity two minutes before the break as Marcus Antonsson bagged his second goal in this year’s competition.
After a goalless second-half, the game went to extra-time, but only after a sensational miss from Alex Mowatt. However, Leeds’ task would be made tougher as Lewie Coyle had to limp off. And with Monk having made all three substitutions already, the Peacocks had to face the extra half-hour with 10 men.
And it seemed that Leeds’ cup run was destined to come to an end when Nelson Oliveira put the Canaries back in front. But Chris Wood’s equaliser meant that spot-kicks were required.
Though Ronaldo Vieira was the man to score the winning penalty, there is no question that Marco Silvestri was Leeds’ hero in the shootout as he saved three of Norwich’s attempts to inspire the Whites to a 3-2 win.
