The Scottish Premiership side were brought back down to Earth in emphatic fashion after the high of their Old Firm win at the weekend.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers
Despite Celtic’s dominance against Rangers at the weekend, few expected Brendan Rodgers’ men to get anything from their Champions League group-stage opener with Barcelona. Nevertheless, few would have also expected what would transpire at the Nou Camp.
Rodgers would have surely instructed his players to keep things tight at the back early on and look to frustrate Luis Enrique’s men for as long as possible.
But that plan fell through inside three minutes as Lionel Messi bagged the opener for the Catalan giants – who last won the trophy in 2015 – and it appeared that it would be a long night for the Hoops.
However, Celtic were handed the perfect chance to bag an equaliser after Saturday’s hat-trick hero Moussa Dembele was brought down in the box by Barca stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. But the German would atone for the mistake by saving the penalty.
The La Liga side – looking to bounce back after suffering a shock defeat to Alaves in their most recent outing – went into the break 2-0 up thanks to Messi.
The floodgates were soon well and truly open however, as Neymar, Andres Iniesta and Messi – completing his hat-trick – put the game beyond any doubt before the hour-mark.
And it was a player that Rodgers knows all too well, Luis Suarez, who completed the rout with a brace in the final 15 minutes to hand Celtic their heaviest ever defeat in Europe.
Here are some of the defining images from a history-making – for all the wrong reasons from a Celtic perspective – night for Rodgers’ men.
