Glasgow Rangers were beaten comfortably, with the Ibrox side losing 5-0 as their rivals picked up the Scottish Premiership title.
There have now been a number of occasions since Rangers returned to the top flight where the Gers have arguably let down their supporters down with their performances in the Old Firm games, but Celtic’s latest victory over Graeme Murty’s side was perhaps the worst of the lot.
It was less than two months ago that Rangers were going into an Old Firm game with many suggesting that a win against the Hoops would set up a title race. The Gers taking the lead twice in that game also hinted that the gap was closing even with the Bhoys still coming out on top.
However, two Old Firm games later and the gap between Celtic and Rangers is arguably as wide as it has been since the latter were promoted to the Scottish Premiership, with the Hoops following their 4-0 Scottish Cup semi-final win by going one better when they met at Parkhead on Sunday.
It was an embarrassing performance from the visitors, and it could have been a lot worse had Jak Alnwick – who was hardly blameless either – not produced some fantastic stops when Celtic came knocking.
And perhaps one image sums up just how one-sided the contest was as it depicts James Forrest scoring Celtic’s third goal on the stroke of half-time. The winger weaved his way through the Rangers defence before finding the back of the net.
In truth, Forrest needed to do little as he danced through several almost non-existent challenges before getting through on goal, and the image conveys that with five Rangers players in shot while Forrest is the only player wearing the green and white hoops.
And yet, there is not the slightest indication from any of the Rangers players that they are about to put a challenge in, and the already almost-composed looks on a couple of faces arguably highlights how little effort seemed to be made trying to win the ball back as Forrest surged into the box from the wing…
