Marco Silvestri was sold by Leeds last month.

Marco Silvestri was sold by Leeds United this summer after three years at the club.

He has moved on to newly promoted Serie A side Hellas Verona, and he was unveiled with his new squad number yesterday.

It is not one his former Leeds owner will approve of.

Massimo Cellino was the owner who signed Silvestri for Leeds, and his dislike of the number 17 was made very clear.

The maverick Italian banned the number 17 from Elland Road, refusing to assign any player the squad number during his three and a half years at the club.

Their weekly match programme was even labelled ’16b’ instead of 17 when the time came around.

So if Silvestri was looking for Cellino’s blessing and good wishes upon his return to Italy, he is unlikely to get it.

Leeds are still to unveil their squad numbers this season and so it remains to be seen if any of their new signings will land the vacant 17 shirt.

After selling his stake in Leeds this summer, Cellino is reported by Tuttomercatoweb to be closing in on a deal to buy Serie B side Brescia.
