Erik Lamela has been out of action for 13 months, with his last appearance in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt coming way back on October 25 2016. But he was finally back on the field this weekend when he played an hour for Spurs’ under-23s against their Chelsea counterparts.

The Argentine winger has been side-lined with hip problems for so long that some Tottenham fans thought he may never been seen in their colours again.

However that was not the case and, while he still as a way to go in his recovery, the fact that he is playing football again can only be a positive.

At his best, Lamela remains a vital player for Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, even if some Spurs fans have never been won over by a player who was always going to take time to settle in a new country.

Prior to his injury Lamela looked to have found a level of consistency required to excel in the Premier League and it will be interesting to see how long he takes to rediscover that form.

Tottenham have impressed in Lamela’s absence but they need a strong squad for the challenges ahead and his attacking qualities will come in very handy in the latter stages of the Champions League.
