West Ham United kicked off the David Moyes era by being beaten 2-0 away at Watford.
While it seemed like the majority of West Ham fans were not pleased about David Moyes’ appointment as Slaven Bilic’s successor, they would have undoubtedly been hoping that the change would prove to be a catalyst for a turnaround in fortunes for the Hammers.
Often new managers instil a new level of belief and confidence that quickly makes a change look inspired. Unfortunately for the Irons, the Moyes era kicked off with a defeat as Watford ran out 2-0 winners at Vicarage Road, leaving Moyes under absolutely no illusions regarding the job facing him at the London Stadium.
And perhaps one photo sums up West Ham’s day better than any other as it depicts Cheikhou Kouyate lying on the floor metres from the Watford goal line with his hands on his head after failing to convert a golden chance.
Heurelho Gomes’ wry smile in the same image perhaps also tells its own story as, while the scoreline shows that Watford ran out comfortable winners, the Hornets were relying on a number of sensational saves from the Brazilian.
But despite the quality of the saves, there is no question that the Hammers should have done better with a number of their chances and not given Gomes a chance to keep the ball out, including ones that fell to Marko Arnautovic and Kouyate.
So while there may have been some positive signs from Moyes’ dugout debut with the Hammers, the emotions that Kouyate was showing in the photo below will surely not be too dissimilar to what the West Ham boss is currently feeling right now.
