Aston Villla player Frederic Guilbert looked devastated over Caen relegation.

Aston Villa fans could be forgiven for forgetting about the signing of Frederic Guilbert.

The 24-year-old joined Aston Villa from Caen for £4.4 million in January [Express & Star], before being loaned back to the relegation-threatened Ligue 1 side for the second part of the season.

Well, that relegation battle ended in heartbreak today as Caen’s 1-0 home defeat by Bordeaux saw Fabien Mercadal’s side demoted to Ligue 2 in Guilbert’s last game for the club he originally joined as a 14-year-old.

The Villa signing was photographed looking visibly distraught at full-time, as a number of Bordeaux players consoled him.

Ironically, Aston Villa fans and some players might be crying tears of joy in about 48 hours.

Dean Smith’s side visit Wembley for the playoff final with Derby County on Monday, where victory would result in their Premier League promotion.

Guilbert could never have imagined that his debut for the Villans might come in the Premier League, given that the West Midlands side were 10th in the table at the time of his signing, so that, if nothing else, might console him.
