Arsenal ace Shkodran Mustafi was discarded as a youngster by Everton.

Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi has made a big impact at the club since signing late in the transfer window.

A pre-season injury to Per Mertesacker caused panic among supporters, but Mustafi’s partnership with Laurent Koscielny’s now looks like one of the best in the Premier League.

As a German international who starred at Euro 2016, Mustafi’s quality was already proven, but the fact he is excelling in the Premier League appears to be giving him real pleasure.

The reason for this is because he already has an oft-forgotten stint at Premier League side Everton, who made what looks like a terrible mistake to let him go.

Mustafi posted a tweet yesterday of him in action for the Toffees’ under-21 team six years ago, declaring that he is now ‘back on top’.

Mustafi played in a couple of cup games for Everton but did not make a Premier League appearance, and David Moyes made the blunder in 2012 to let him leave for Sampdoria.

He impressed for the Italian side and earned a switch to Valencia, where he kicked on further and established himself as a regular German international.

Arsenal paid £35 million to sign Mustafi in the summer, and their gain is certainly a source of frustration from Everton’s perspective, as one that got away.
