Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been celebrating a very special day for his homeland.
On April 27 1960 Togo gained independence from France. And 54 years later, Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmanuel Adebayor sent a special message to his homeland on his official Instagram account.
Posting a picture of himself in his Spurs kit, but with the colours and motto of the country of his birth, the striker wrote, ‘Happy Independence Day to Togo. Where my heart belongs. Love you all.’
It was a heartfelt message on a commemorative day for the country he has served as an international player since the beginning of the century. And it was clear that while he is enjoying something of a renaissance under current Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood, some things are considerably more important and more worthy of celebrating than football.
The country’s motto translates as, ‘Work, Liberty, Homeland,’ and it is something Adebayor is clearly very proud of.
