As you may have heard, Gabriel Martinelli has taken the No.11 shirt at Arsenal, which was previously worn by Lucas Torreira.
It seemed as if the Uruguay international had simply swapped with the Brazilian, as he was seen wearing the No.35 shirt while in the gym at London Colney.
However, Oleksandr Zinchenko has just taken the No.35 shirt following his arrival from Manchester City.
Now, something interesting has been spotted at London Colney.
What’s the story?
Well, Torreira has now been photographed wearing the No.28 shirt, which has been vacant since Joe Willock moved to Newcastle.
The £26.5m man is said to want a move back to Italy, but if an exit was set to happen, why would he then take a new number at Arsenal?
Torreira may just be using any old training gear as he pushes to leave, but if he had any expectation of leaving the Emirates Stadium soon, he could have just told Mikel Arteta to leave him numberless.
It is certainly possible that Torreira’s switch to No.28 means something, although only time will tell.
Arsenal must get a good deal for Lucas Torreira
In our view, Arsenal must improve when it comes to selling their unwanted players.
The Gunners failed to find buyers for Mesut Özil, Shkodran Mustafi and Sead Kolasinac, which resulted in them having to terminate the trio’s contracts just to get them off the wage bill.
It has even been said that the same is about to happen to Hector Bellerin, as Real Betis continue to play hardball over a permanent deal, following last season’s loan.
Of course, it is difficult to sell unwanted players, but Liverpool have proven that it can be done with the sales of Dominic Solanke for £19m, Christian Benteke for £27m and Mamadou Sakho for £26m.
Hopefully, Edu can improve this part of his role, as it would allow him and Arteta to reinvest more money into new additions in future windows.
