The seldom seen centre-back has put his time out of the Rangers starting XI to good use.

Rangers defender Philippe Senderos has arguably made more of an impact off the pitch than on it this season.

He’s only started three Scottish Premiership games since signing on a free in the summer but, with his career at a crossroads, the Swiss centre-back has admitted to Rangers TV that he is already thinking about life beyond the pitch and a potential career in coaching.

“[It’s] a possibility,” the 32 year-old said.”I think [helping the young players in training] shows that I care about the young players, I care about the club, I care about my position in the team, whether I’m playing or not.

“It’s what I am about. It’s not a coincidence. I try and help the team out and be there for my team-mates. So if I can do that, it’s a positive thing.”

And if there’s one man convinced that Senderos could make the grade on the touchline, its 20-year-old starlet David Bates.

The young defender has worked closely with the former Arsenal, AC Milan and Valencia centre-back since making his move from Raith Rovers permanent and he admits that he has learned priceless lessons training alongside a player who has spent the majority of his professional career at the top level.

“Philippe always takes me to do extra bits after training like fast feet, hitting me into my feet and defensive stuff,” Bates told the club’s official website. “This is like a dream to me because I am a Rangers fan and then obviously working with the likes of Philippe who has played Champions League and Premier League is incredible.

Rangers are aiming to build from the ground up via a major restructure lead by a new manager and Director of Football combination, with the club’s next generation of talent set to plar a major role in attempting to close the cavernous gap between themselves and Old Firm rivals Celtic.

And perhaps Senderos could one day prove an invaluable addition to the coaching staff with a number of talent youngsters, from Bates to 15-year-old Billy Gilmour, tipped as future first-teamers.

Senderos, a model professional for over a decade, could be an ideal candidate to impart those important lessons.
