Phil Thompson believes that Tottenham Hotspur forward Heung-min Son is much more impressive as an impact player.
Phil Thompson told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (broadcast on 16th September 2017 from 12:00 pm) that he feels that Heung-min Son is a fantastic impact player for Tottenham, but becomes less effective when he enjoys a run of games in the side.
Son has enjoyed a mixed time since arriving at Spurs for £22 million (via Guardian) back in 2015, bouncing back from a fairly ordinary first season to enjoy much more impressive campaign last term which arguably really established him as an important player for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
This season, his form has been mixed. But he demonstrated his quality with a stunning goal in their Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund in midweek.
And speaking before Tottenham’s game with Swansea on Saturday evening, Thompson suggested that for Pochettino to get the best out of the South Korea international, he should consider using him more sparingly.
“His problem is when he plays four, five, six games, then he starts trying to do too much, but when he comes into the side, he’s a fantastic impact player.”
It will be interesting to see whether Thompson is proved right as Son has arguably been very impressive in the two games he has started since the international break.
While he failed to score or create an assist against Swansea at Wembley, he was arguably one of Tottenham’s best players while he was on the pitch in the goalless draw, and that performance may have perhaps done enough to convince Pochettino to give him a prominent role for the upcoming League Cup clash with Barnsley in midweek, and a place in the side against West Ham next weekend.
