Phil Thompson has told Sporting Life that Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham has really surprised him so far this season.

Abraham has been given his chance at Chelsea by Frank Lampard this term, and the youngster has seized it with both hands.

Abraham currently leads the way in the Premier League scoring charts, after hitting eight goals in eight games.

The Chelsea striker has been remarkably consistent in front of goal.

And Thompson admits that Abraham’s form so far this term has shocked him.

“Tammy Abraham has surprised me,” Thompson said. “He has been out on-loan a few times and you knew he could score goals in the Championship, but there was always a doubt as to whether he could do it in the Premier League.

“He did alright against Manchester United and missed a penalty against Liverpool in the Supercup. People, myself included, doubted whether he could do it after just a short period of time.

“So many people have graced the Championship and scored, yet couldn’t do it in the Premier League, but he has done this and he has looked more confident in doing it as the season has progressed.”

Abraham now looks to have fully established himself as Chelsea’s number one striker, ahead of both Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud.

The young forward’s form was even recognised by England over the recent international break, with Abraham included in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Abraham is likely to start again for Chelsea this weekend, when they take on Newcastle United.
