Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson says that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should be on top of Liverpool’s target list in January.

Former Liverpool player turned football pundit Phil Thompson believes that the Reds need to sign a defender and a striker in the January transfer window.

Liverpool are sitting seventh in the Premier League and are seven points off the top ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Manchester United. However, Thompson is confident that the Reds will achieve another top-four finish if they make right reinforcements in January.

While a top-quality defender is necessary, Thompson feels that the Reds must also consider signing a striker.

With Daniel Sturridge struggling for form, Danny Ings having fitness issues, and Ben Woodburn not yet ready for week in week out action, Liverpool have relied heavily on Roberto Firmino, who is not an out-an-out striker.

Thompson says that Liverpool should go for Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the January transfer window, if the Gabon striker is available.

The 28-year-old is arguably a world-class striker and has scored 39 and 40 goals in all competitions in his last two seasons respectively.

This season he has scored eight Bundesliga goals in seven games already. However, Liverpool will have to pay in the north of £63 million for his signature.

“I honestly believe we will still finish in the top four because we can outgun most teams,” said Thompson to Sky Sports. “But I do feel that come January we need to improve the defenders and get an out-and-out striker. If Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang became available then he should be on our hit list.

“I think it’s always hard to criticise Klopp. Yes, we can have our opinions but it’s not like Klopp says ‘I want that player’ and it just happens. There’s a whole lot of problems and there are limitations on the fees and salaries you can pay.”
