The former Liverpool star believes it is the biggest challenge his former side face.

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has told Sky Sports that the big thing for Liverpool is to improve mentally.

The Reds have made a strong start to this season, picking up 13 points from their first six games.

They have been impressive too, with wins over Chelsea, Arsenal and Leicester City under their belt already.

They were in fine form again this weekend as they comfortably beat Hull City 5-1 at Anfield.

The only negative performance they have put in was against Burnley as they were beaten 2-0 at Turf Moor, and Thompson believes they need to improve mentally to ensure they pick up wins against the so-called ‘lesser’ teams.

I think the big thing for Liverpool to improve is mentally,” he told Sky Sports.

“This team ability wise and technically is absolutely terrific but the mental side, i.e. the Burnley game, it comes unstuck. Klopp is trying to make the mental approach of the fans and the players to get the right result.”

A look over the last two seasons certainly does show that Liverpool have to improve their record against the alleged weaker teams.

In 16 games against the six teams relegated from the Premier League in the last two seasons, they have picked up a total of 30 points.

Compare that to the likes of Arsenal, who picked up 44 points against the same teams and it shows that Liverpool do have work to do in that area.

The win over Hull showed Liverpool are ready to turn that record around and Jurgen Klopp will be hoping they can replicate that performance across the entire campaign.
