Liverpool have conceded more goals than any of the Premier League’s top five teams.

Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson has told Sky Sports that the Reds defensive issues should be expected because of their attacking style.

Jurgen Klopp’s team have started the season on fire, with seven wins from ten games seeing them sit joint top of the table, level on points with Arsenal and Manchester City.

A particular highlight of their performances so far has been their attacking power, having scored the joint highest amount of goals in the division.

They have not been as impressive in defence, though, conceding 13 goals so far, the most of all the top six sides.

That has seen them criticised and debates raised about their title credentials but Thompson says it should just be expected.

“I think, maybe, you’ve got to expect them with this side because they are so adventurous,” he told Sky Sports.

“Jordan Henderson is the anchorman for goodness sake and that tells you everything about this Liverpool side.”

While openly saying he is not concerned about the defensive issues, Jurgen Klopp will very likely be determined to fix the problem.

They are on course to concede 49 goals this season and since the Premier League swapped to 20 teams in 1995/96, no teams has won the league conceding that many.

The winners who conceded the most were Manchester United with a tally of 44 and that shows Liverpool will need to address their defence sooner rather than later if they want to end up as champions.
