The Liverpool goalkeeper has come in for criticism in recent weeks and was dropped against Middlesbrough.

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has told Sky Sports that Loris Karius has been made a scapegoat in this current team.

The German goalkeeper arrived at the club in the summer transfer window as a potential replacement for Simon Mignolet.

He has since established himself as the number one at Anfield ahead of the Belgian.

However, Wednesday night’s game against Middlesbrough saw him dropped in favour of Mignolet after mistakes against Bournemouth and West Ham in recent weeks.

The decision from Klopp to drop his man has caused debate and Thompson has offered his views on the current situation.

“He [Karius] is possibly a scapegoat,” he told Sky Sports.

“Maybe [Klopp’s] just trying to save him from this. I think it can help him, as it was getting more and more difficult. Mignolet hadn’t done a lot wrong when he was taken out of the line-up.”

It will be interesting to see how long that Loris Karius is left out of the Liverpool team after being dropped this week.

It was a big decision for Klopp to take the German out of his team; especially given the backing he has given him in recent weeks.

He was likely just looking to take his man out of the firing line, but with the Merseyside derby their next game he now has a major decision on his hands.

If he elects to leave Karius out once again, then that may suggest his summer signing has lost his manager’s faith.
