Phil Thompson believes Liverpool could tempt Tottenham to sign Dele Alli
Phil Thompson has urged Liverpool to spend any fee gained from selling Coutinho to Barcelona on Tottenham star Dele Alli.
Quoted by The Mirror, Thompson believes Spurs could be convinced to sell at the right price.
Alli is one of four players he recommends Liverpool target, also including Sergio Aguero, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.. and even swapping Coutinho for ex-Reds ace Luis Suarez.
He said: “They could go after Dele Alli, who was a Liverpool supporter as a kid.
“Tottenham are a bit like Liverpool in that there’s always a price on a player.”
Tottenham have Alli under contract until 2022 and are under no pressure to sell the midfielder.
Thompson’s comments seem fanciful, with Spurs unlikely to entertain offers from another Premier League club for their young star.
They may have cashed in on Kyle Walker, but that was because they had a ready made replacement in Kieran Trippier.
As they discovered with Gareth Bale, Dele Alli should be deemed irreplaceable.
