Tottenham Hotspur are currently three points off the Premier League’s top four.
With 15 games to go, it is beginning to look like one of the most competitive races for the spots between second and sixth the league has known, with Manchester City seemingly still out of sight despite their lead at the top being cut to 12 points after their defeat to the Reds at the weekend.
Manchester United currently find themselves second, with Jurgen Klopp’s men third and the Blues fourth, leaving Tottenham outside of the top four by three points and their bitter rivals Arsenal somewhat struggling to keep up as they are five points back.
And Thompson has suggested that he is not expecting too much movement between now and the end of the season, and explained why he is expecting Spurs to miss out on a Champions League qualification spot.
“I think Liverpool have proved they are the second-best team in the league,” he told Sky Sports.
“That’s not just because of Sunday’s result but because of their general play. That game showed the level they’re at, even without Philippe Coutinho and Virgil van Dijk.
“I see the battle for the final Champions League spot being between Chelsea and Tottenham. On their day Spurs can be different class but they can also have periods where they get a bit flaky, so I’m going for Chelsea as they have a bit more consistency,” he added.
While the Sky Sports pundit is not overly confident about Tottenham’s chances of making the top four, it is perhaps fair to suggest that they seem to have slightly more momentum than Antonio Conte’s side, having won eight of their last 10 games in all competitions while Chelsea have drawn their last four and not scored in three.
And with the transfer window still open for a couple more weeks, perhaps there may be an event still to come in the market that leaves Thompson reconsidering his choices.
