Phil Thompson says he expects Tottenham will finish fifth this season.

SkySports pundit Phil Thompson has predicted Tottenham Hotspur will finish fifth this season.

Spurs are yet to sign any players this season and the former Liverpool defender suggests he cannot see them taking a forward step unless that changes.

Spurs finished in second place last season behind Chelsea, but have had to watch on as their rivals have strengthened.

A fifth place finish would be disappointing as it would mean they would miss out on Champions League qualification.

Thompson said: “I hate giving predictions now because we don’t know who will come through the door.

“They could make some fantastic signings, as could most, but as things stand I think Spurs will finish fifth.”

Marcus Rashford #19 of Manchester United attempts to shoot around Kyle Walker #2 of Manchester City at NRG Stadium on July 20, 2017 in Houston, Texas.

Thompson went onto suggest Spurs should look at re-signing Swansea attacker Gylfi Sigurdsson, having been frustrated to so far in their attempts to sign Ross Barkley from Everton.

Spurs have had a mixed pre-season, beating Paris Saint-Germain and losing to Roma and Manchester City.

They have sold Kyle Walker to City, but Thompson does not believe this will negatively effect them as replacement Kieran Tripper has a ‘better final ball’.

Instead he believes the biggest challenge from their lack of transfer activity will be a mental one, commenting: “I do think they do need to do some business, if only to liven up the dressing room.

“I think players can get too comfortable sometimes, thinking that their positions are safe, knowing players aren’t going to take them.”
