Phil Thompson has told Sky Sports that the addition of Sadio Mane has benefited Liverpool by giving the club a brand new attacking dimension.

The 24-year-old has been outstanding since sealing a £34m move from Southampton this summer, scoring twice in his first three Premier League games and becoming a firm fan favourite.

Jurgen Klopp’s side make the trip to Chelsea on Friday night off the back of an impressive 4-1 win over league champions Leicester City, in which Mane struck.

Sky Sports pundit Thompson has been impressed by the former Metz man, saying he has all of the attributes to become an important player for the club.

“I think Klopp needed that, someone with great pace behind the front man, and Mane gives you that,” Thompson said.

“He has electric pace and he has a great football brain too. Because he can see things with the pace he’s moving at, it means he’s had a massive impact on this team.”

Liverpool legend Thompson also heaped praise on the club overall, saying the Reds have played some great football so far this season.

“I’ve been very impressed overall. Yes, the Burnley game did not go according to plan but they played some good football during in it,” he went on to say.

“There have been some sensational bits of football in there. Jurgen Klopp has been true to the way he plays and has sent them out with a true attacking intent.

“He’s using just one holding midfield player and the attacking players have all clicked.”

Mane has certainly adjusted to life on Merseyside very rapidly, and his addition to the side has given Klopp a range of options in the attacking third.

Klopp will hope Mane can produce the same type of magic against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Friday night.
