Phil Thompson names player Liverpool should target with Coutinho money

Liverpool’s transfer budget has been boosted by up to £146 million by the sale of Philippe Coutinho.

Phil Thompson has told Sky Sports that Liverpool should consider using the money that they have made from selling Philippe Coutinho on targeting Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Sky Sports reports that the Reds have pocketed £146 million from the sale of the Brazilian to the Catalan giants, and the Kop will no doubt be hoping that Jurgen Klopp invests at least some of the money before the deadline of this month’s window.

And Sky Sports pundit Thompson believes that a move for the Gabon international should be considered by the Merseyside club as they look to try and fill the void that the little magician has left behind at Anfield.

“Maybe it should be used for an out-and-out striker and then Roberto Firmino can drop back and play the Coutinho role,” he told Sky Sports. “Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is one who would be on my list and somebody you could get.

“It would certainly be that quality you’d be looking for, although he would need to have the right the work ethic. I’m not sure why he’s not been on more sides’ shopping lists.”

Based on Aubameyang’s record at the Westfalenstadion alone, there is surely no doubt that he would be a fantastic addition to Klopp’s squad this month as they look to ensure a top four spot at least.

The 28-year-old has scored 13 goals in just 15 top flight games for the Bundesliga outfit, while his record last season was even more staggering with 31 goals coming in 32 league fixtures.

And if Liverpool did decide to target the forward and managed to pull off a deal, it would certainly appear that they would definitely have the fire-power to cope without Coutinho if he managed to bring the form to the Premier League that he has shown in Germany over the last few years.
