Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has issued the Reds with a warning ahead of their Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday.

Spurs, who will play their final league game ahead of the official unveiling of their new stadium back at N17, have lost three and drawn one of their last four domestic matches.

The Merseysiders, meanwhile, sit top of the table but they have played a game more than Manchester City, who in turn could leapfrog them at the summit as they play on Saturday.

As a result, there is a lot at stake, with one side fighting for their title hopes and the other desperate to keep a number of fellow Champions League hopefuls – including Arsenal, one point behind – at bay.

Thompson, who made 477 appearances for Liverpool (official club website), said Spurs are a top-quality and dangerous team who play the game well, as well as deeming Mauricio Pochettino top class.

In addition, with Tottenham moving into their new stadium, which he described as “magnificent”, he expects them to be in “need” of Champions League football for next season, hence why he thinks Jurgen Klopp’s charges will need to be at their best.

“Spurs are always a top side. I think everyone loves the way they play the game, the way they love to build-up and they have got a top-class manager who likes to change things,” Thompson told Sky Sports News.

“Spurs are still a dangerous side at any time. They may have lost three of the last four but you know them coming to Anfield, they may not be going for the title, but they need to consolidate to play in the Champions League because they need it in that magnificent new stadium of theirs… Liverpool are going to have to be at their best on Sunday.”
