Liverpool sold Lucas Leiva to Lazio this week, and Phil Thompson has paid tribute to the Brazilian.

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has thanked Lucas Leiva for his contribution to the Reds after joining Lazio this week.

The Brazilian midfielder ended a decade-long stint with Liverpool by joining the Serie A outfit on a three-year deal earlier in the week.

The 30-year-old, a £5 million signing from Gremio in 2007, was the Reds’ longest serving player prior to his exit for the same fee.

Lucas revealed his “sadness” at leaving Anfield following his exit, and another Liverpool legend Thompson has paid tribute to the tough-tackling midfielder with an emotional message on social networking site Twitter.

Lucas managed 247 Premier League appearances for Liverpool during his lengthy stay on Merseyside, and 345 in total.

He made his debut in a 3-0 friendly win over Triestina.
