Shkodran Mustafi has been at Arsenal since 2016.

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson criticised Arsenal central defender Shkodran Mustafi on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News on Saturday afternoon (1:11pm, April 27, 2019).

The former Liverpool central defender said that he has never liked Mustafi, and believes that the 27-year-old Germany international does not have good positional sense.

Thompson said about Mustafi on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News on Saturday afternoon (1:11pm, April 27, 2019): “I have never been a liker of Mustafi. I think he is totally aggressive without having any positional play about him.”

New defender needed

Mustafi has been on the books of Arsenal since the summer of 2016 when he joined from Valencia for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be with £35 million.

The 27-year-old is a good defender, but the former Valencia man does make too many mistakes and is often caught out of position.

If Arsenal are to make themselves regulars in the top four of the Premier League and compete for the league title in the coming years, then they have to sign better defenders.

According to WhoScored, Mustafi has made 29 appearances in the Premier League for Arsenal this season, scoring two goals in the process, and has scored one goal in four Europa League matches for the Gunners.
