Soccer Saturday pundit Phil Thompson has claimed on Sky Sports’ website that West Ham United boss David Moyes has been one of the Premier League’s best managers this season.

The former Manchester United and Everton manager replaced Slaven Bilic towards the end of 2017 with the club in the relegation zone, and has guided them to comfortable 13th place in the Premier League table.

Thompson believes he is up there with the likes of Pep Guardiola, Sean Dyche and Mauricio Pochettino this season for his work at the London Stadium, in a huge claim that is likely to be met with disagreement by Hammers fans.

“I think Moyes should be in there with the top manager performances of the season because of the emotional battles in that job, putting out fires all over the place with fans, owners and players,” Thompson said.

“He’s had to use all of his experience to keep them in the Premier League and prevent a potential implosion.”

Moyes’ future at West Ham is in huge doubt, after he was only contracted at the London Stadium until the end of the season when taking over from Bilic.

No decision has been made, though the Daily Mirror has claimed that West Ham chiefs held talks with Shakhtar Donetsk manager Paulo Fonseca on Monday. The Portuguese boss is also only contracted until the end of the season.
