Wolverhampton Wanderers, Cardiff City and Aston Villa will win promotion from the Championship, says Phil Thompson.

The former Liverpool and Sheffield United central defender believes that Villa will go back to the top flight of English top flight via the Championship playoffs.
Thompson has backed Wolverhampton Wanderers and Cardiff City to clinch automatic promotion to the Premier League

“It’s a huge game on Sunday, but I do think that Cardiff will hold on to their place in the automatic promotion places alongside Wolves,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“Then anything can happen in the play-offs and I know it was a bad result against QPR, but I think Aston Villa have too much quality for the others when it comes to delivering when it really matters.”

Promotion chances
Wolves have been the best team in the Championship this season, and Nuno’s side should win the league title.
Cardiff are in good form and have momentum, and Neil Warnock’s side should just about finish runners-up.
Villa, though, can still finish second and win automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Steve Bruce’s side are seven points behind second-placed Cardiff, and there are still enough games for the Villans to catch the Bluebirds.
Fulham’s chances of winning promotion via the Championship playoffs cannot be written off either, while Middlesbrough could yet spring a surprise given how much they have improved under manager Tony Pulis.
