The knockout stages will be a new experience for Mauricio Pochettino as Tottenham boss, with all their previous European football after Christmas coming in the Europa League since the Argentinian arrived.
That may leave some fans slightly concerned about whether still being at Europe’s top table will harm their chances of going one better in the top flight as the criticism levelled at Spurs in recent years has been whether they have the depth to back up what is arguably one of the most impressive starting XI’s around.
But Thompson has suggested that the improvement and emergence from some players means that they can handle the demands of playing in the latter stages in a number of competitions.
“I think they have got a decent squad,” he told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (broadcast on 4th November 2017 from 12:00 pm) when asked if Tottenham’s European progress could derail any domestic title bid. “We’re seeing other players coming in now, we’re seeing better performances from Sissoko, we’re seeing Winks has come into the side. It’s giving them more options, whether to use Eric Dier alongside Winks or whether he goes into a back three, so there’s permutations there. I think they’ll be alright.
“They’re in a good position at the moment, they’re in a great frame of mind,” he went on to add.
Of course, any side that is going to achieve great things in the most prestigious competitions needs some luck along the way with injuries and suspensions – but it certainly appears that if Tottenham can get that luck, they have a brilliant chance to bag some silverware this term.
