Arne Slot has come under criticism this season as Liverpool continue to put in some questionable performances.
Even so, the Reds are currently unbeaten in their last 12 matches heading into their Champions League fixture against Marseille.
Despite that record, there are signs that not everything is as positive as it may seem on paper.
During that span, they have just scraped past sides like Wolves and a nine-man Tottenham Hotspur.
There have also been some disappointing draws, including a recent 1-1 result against Burnley.
What Steven Gerrard Had to Say About Arne Slot
Burnley have spent most of the 2025/26 season fighting to stay up, so taking just a point at home didn’t sit well with Steven Gerrard.
Speaking on TNT Sports after the draw, the former Liverpool captain didn’t hold back in his criticism of how Slot’s side performed.
He said: “Well that won’t be acceptable, a draw with Burnley at home, with all due respect. And I’m critical of the Liverpool team even though they are on a better run in terms of unbeaten games.
“The draws to Leeds and Burnley at home, you know and I know, that’s not acceptable. There will be a lot of criticism that comes the manager’s way again.”
The scrutiny around Slot has only intensified recently, especially after a run of nine losses in 12 matches added more pressure.
There have even been reports suggesting Liverpool are preparing to part ways with him come summer.
Phil Thompson admits surprise over Gerrard’s comments
Even with talk of Slot’s future hanging over the club, Phil Thompson still found himself caught off guard by what Gerrard had to say.
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast with Sam Allardyce, the host asked: “Are you worried when people like Steven Gerrard are voicing concerns? Does that worry you?”
Thompson replied: “Voicing concerns about the manager?”
“Has he been doing that?” Allardyce asked in response, to which the host said: “Apparently he has.”
Thompson answered: “Well, I haven’t heard that. You’ve literally shocked me. I would be surprised if he’s been quite open like that.”
This isn’t a case of pundits looking for headlines either. Steven Gerrard is usually careful with his words and rarely speaks out without reason.
If his frustration is starting to show publicly, there are clearly deeper problems at play.
