Phil Parkinson’s comments to the Bolton News about Jon Flanagan from last season should excite Glasgow Rangers supporters.

According to the Daily Mail, Rangers are on the verge of signing Flanagan from Liverpool, with the defender set to move to Ibrox in the near future.

Flanagan spent last season on loan at Bolton, when he was managed by Parkinson, and the Rangers target was raved about by his former manager during his time at the Macron Stadium.

Parkinson said: “He has looked a level above at times. We put him into the team when we went back to a back four. He’s a class act.

“He epitomises the kind of player who relishes the challenge we are faced with.

“He’s played at Premier League level, like Andy Taylor, and they are both absolutely the types we need at the moment.”

The comments show just what a talent Rangers will be getting, if they do manage to get a deal for Flanagan over the line.

Although the full-back’s career has stalled more recently, Flanagan is still very highly regarded – and Steven Gerrard knows him better than most.

Gerrard and Flanagan were teammates at Liverpool earlier in their careers, and the new Rangers boss may be the ideal man to get the 25-year-old back on track.

If Flanagan does arrive at Ibrox then he could be in competition with James Tavernier for the right-back berth in Gerrard’s starting line-up.
